Capella StudentArticles › How much writing

How much writing is there at Capella?

A great deal, in APA format, in both formats of study.

Capella assesses through substantial written pieces judged against published scoring guides. There are no quizzes to carry you. If writing is the part you dread, that belongs in the school decision rather than being discovered in week three.

What the work actually looks like

An assessment is typically a structured written piece addressing several competencies at once, with sources, in APA. It is closer to a short professional report than to an essay, and it is judged criterion by criterion rather than holistically.

Some courses also require a recorded video assessment through Kaltura — still marked against a written scoring guide, on reasoning and structure rather than production values.

Why this suits some nurses very well

If you can write, Capella is unusually transparent about what it wants. The scoring guide is published before you start, so the target is visible. Nurses who read it first and structure to it tend to do well quickly, which in a session-billed format means finishing cheaply.

And why it does not suit others

If writing is genuinely your weak point, a heavy writing load in every course is a real cost — in hours, in returned assessments, and therefore in sessions. It is worth weighing a school whose assessment style fits you better, and that is a legitimate reason to choose differently.

The habit that halves the pain

Open the scoring guide before the prompt. Turn each criterion into a heading. Make sure every one is visibly addressed before you submit. It is the single highest-return study habit here, and it prevents the most common cause of a returned assessment.

Do I need to be good at APA?

You need to be competent and consistent. It is a learnable, mechanical skill rather than a talent, and support is available — but it is used constantly, so it is worth getting comfortable with early rather than fighting it every assessment.

How long is a typical assessment?

Substantial rather than enormous — a structured piece with sources, not a dissertation. The demanding part is meeting every criterion in the scoring guide rather than reaching a word count.

Is there less writing in GuidedPath?

No. The written-assessment model runs across Capella. GuidedPath adds weekly discussion posts on top, so if anything there is slightly more writing overall, spread differently.
