Capella StudentArticles › RN-to-BSN timeline

How long does Capella RN-to-BSN take?

Commonly two to four 12-week sessions, so roughly six to eleven months.

It is the shortest route Capella offers because you arrive with a licence and an associate degree already counting, and because GuidedPath accepts up to 135 quarter credits toward it.

Why this one is fast

An RN-to-BSN is a completion programme. You are not starting a bachelor's, you are finishing one, and the general education requirement is frequently covered outright by what you already hold. That is why the timeline is measured in sessions rather than years.

What actually decides your number

  • Transfer credit, which is the dominant factor. Have it assessed before you choose a format, because the two formats count prior learning differently.
  • Weekly hours. Twenty or more and two sessions is realistic. Under ten and plan for four.
  • Whether you front-load. Momentum in the first session lowers the total more than effort in the last one.

The claim to be careful with

You will see "RN-to-BSN in months" advertised widely. It is achievable, and it describes people who arrived with near-complete general education and had real hours. Get your own assessment before adopting anyone else's timeline as your plan.

Can you finish an RN-to-BSN in one session?

Rarely. Two is the realistic floor for most nurses even with heavy transfer credit, because there is still coursework to produce and assessments are substantial written pieces.

Does the timeline change between formats?

Yes. FlexPath rewards speed directly, so a fast nurse finishes sooner and cheaper. GuidedPath runs 10-week courses on a fixed quarterly calendar, so the pace is set for you.

Do I need prerequisites first?

Capella publishes an RN-to-BSN route without additional prerequisites for qualifying applicants. What you need is the accredited associate degree, the current unrestricted licence and the transcript.
